In the quiet suburbs of Fairfax, VA, Beautiful/Decay was founded in 1996 as a hand-photocopied, black & white graffiti “zine”. Borrowing the name from a quote by artist Barry McGee (Twist), “Beautiful/Decay” describes everything we love about emerging art and underground culture.
Since then, Beautiful/Decay has transcended the page and grown organically to encompass a number of creative projects. The apparel line began with just four T-shirts as a way to further support and collaborate with the artists and designers featured on our pages. Rather than hiding artists’ works behind “branding” or “marketing” ploys, we proudly showcase their unfiltered, unedited voices and visions.
Beautiful/Decay carefully handpicks artists and designers, representing a cross section of eclectic themes and imagery. From multimedia artist Drew Liverman and digital design collective eBoy, who put a new-wave spin on pop culture, to Rob Thom and Kyle Thomas, whose designs wink at the carefully detailed drawings found carved into wooden school desks, the collection features a virtual honor roll of Beautiful/Decay alumni.
At the top of the class is Aya Kato, who debuts Beautiful/Decay’s first ever solo apparel line. This exclusive collection showcases Aya’s fresh mix of fairytale designs and Japanese/French nouveau influences and represents the fever pitch that has grown around her work.
Since B/D’s inception, it’s goal has been to promote both emerging and established artists alike through the publication and now, the Beautiful/Decay apparel line. Beautiful/Decay Apparel is a constantly evolving endeavor and will continue to encompass collaborative projects with a wide cross-section of visual talents.
